3D Pen Filament, DIKI 20 PCS 1.75 MM PLA
3D Pen Filament, DIKI 20 PCS 1.75 MM PLA Best Pure Filament for 3D Printer Pen, 3D Printing or Modeling Stereoscopic Rapid Prototyping no Peculiar Smell with Total of 20 Different Colors
Sadly the second 3D printer I had for review wasn’t working, must have got damaged in transit – it happens. I’m waiting to hear back from sellers, but I had one a few weeks back so got that out and had a play around.
These are really fun devices, quick to use but do need lots of practice before you make anything like those shown in images !!
These are made of PLA plastic. I looked up online the difference between PLA and ABS, not knowing anything about them – there’s lots of info but this summary from website protoparadigm is perfect:
ABS – Its strength, flexibility, machinability, and higher temperature resistance make it often a preferred plastic for engineers, and professional applications. The hot plastic smell deter some as does the plastics petroleum based origin. The additional requirement of a heated print bed means there are some printers simply incapable of printing ABS with any reliability.
PLA – The wide range of available colors and translucencies and glossy feel often attract those who print for display or small household uses. Many appreciate the plant based origins and prefer the semi-sweet smell over ABS. When properly cooled, PLA seems to have higher maximum printing speeds, lower layer heights, and sharper printed corners. Combining this with low warping on parts make it a popular plastic for home printers, hobbyists, and schools.
So how did they perform?
Well, they were easy to melt, I made a couple of little 3D pieces…simple shapes rather than anything specific. The colours are good and bright and the yellow and green I used kept their colour well. They didn’t have an unpleasant smell, having looked up info in the two types I think the ones that came with the pen were ABS as they had a horrible plastic smell, and this PLA type is far preferable – for me that’s a huge plus, and of course environmentally these win out too.
The coils didn’t tangle and were easy to recoil after use. they come in sealed bags, PLA does absorb moisture according to what I’ve read so after use try and reseal and keep in a dry atmosphere – maybe with some of those silica gel bags?
A good selection of colours, a product that’s useful and well priced and a great starter kids for hobbyists.
